Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does it cost to volunteer with ICS?
It won’t cost you anything to volunteer with ICS. It’s a fully funded programme by the UK government.

2. Who can apply to be part of this programme?
Anyone who is between the ages of 18-25 years old, with good English language skills. They must be able to commit to a full 10 weeks to learn more about community development and have the desire to serve their community and nation.

3. Can I volunteer more than once?
If you have already volunteered in the ICS programme, you are not eligible to apply again. Reason being, the programme aims to give the opportunity to as many people as possible. However, if you have been a volunteer who is 23+, with leadership and motivational skills you may apply to volunteer again as a Team Leader.

4. Who else will I be on the placement with?
Whilst on placement, you will be with the other in country volunteers as well as the UK volunteers.

5. Where will I stay and what will I eat?
When you have been accepted to be part of the programme, all your accommodation and food will be provided for you for the 10 weeks.

6. Am I allowed free time during the weekend?
Team effort is a big part of ICS. All your activities will be done together with your whole team. This is more time to spend with your team and get to know each other

7. After the placement, can I volunteer abroad?
There are many opportunities to go abroad with Tearfund, these trips require you to raise funds and pay to go abroad. Visit for more information.

8. I don’t have Matric, can I still apply?
Yes, you may still apply and like everyone else, your acceptance will be based on how capable you are in the selection process.

9. I am not a South African citizen, can I still apply?
You may apply, as long as you have a relevant permit to reside in the country.

10. How do I apply?
