INTERNATIONAL CITIZENSHIP SERVICE
Challenge yourself to change YOUR world - Volunteer in South Africa

“Make a difference in some of the poorest communities in the world. Grow in confidence and develop skills. Touch a life and change a community. Use creative ideas and work alongside local NGO’s to bring about real change.”

The International Citizenship Service (ICS) programme is a UK government-funded, global volunteering programme, which supports young people from all backgrounds, between the ages of 18-25 years, to make a lasting difference to some of the world’s poorest communities.

During this once-in-a-lifetime volunteering opportunity, UK and South African volunteers work together with local community structures and grass root organisations to reduce the vulnerability of children living in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

Zoë-Life is partnering with Tearfund, a Christian international aid and development agency, to bring the ICS programme to South Africa. The aim of ICS is to provide young people with an opportunity to increase their awareness and understanding of poverty, equality and development; improve their cross cultural understanding and communication skills and become inspired to make a difference in their communities.

Volunteer memoirs

“Volunteering with ICS is a journey to development, empowerment, and exploration on diverse environments and cultures. As a volunteer it was the place where I had to leave my comfort zone and face challenges, furthermore it’s a warm welcoming place where I found happiness and overwhelming love from extremely kind and delightful children.

Children who were without and in humble situations but were joyful despite their circumstances. Nothing was more exciting when every day the children would run to hug you in the morning. I learnt to integrate with different people from all walks of life, who came together to be part of one programme. Each ICS volunteer had different attitudes, perspectives and skills to fulfill a shared goal which was to develop a community and have a lasting effect on the impact of poverty. The power of God’s hand has truly become apparent to me throughout the ICS programme and this has inspired me to carry on walking on the path that He has laid out in front of me.”
