The Blue Roof Life Space

The Blue Roof in Wentworth, South of Durban, was originally a notorious nightclub. The space was reinvented for good, however, when Alicia Keys and Keep a Child Alive (KCA) turned it into a wellness centre for comprehensive HIV treatment in YEAR. It was under this mandate that the space provided HIV services and support to thousands of people for 11 years.

In 2016, KCA gave Zoëlife the opportunity to take Blue Roof through a second transformation so that it would be able to better meet the needs of the community over a decade later. With broader societal issues around children and youth becoming increasingly evident, Zoëlife widened the focus of the centre from HIV interventions to community wellness more broadly and re-launched it as the Blue Roof Life Space.

The physical building is now a hub from which a range of services and interventions can be run. In line with the broader Zoëlife focus on wellness in all its forms, Blue Roof has is a place to offer friendship and support, health and educational solutions and creative opportunities to help individuals break out of damaging cycles.

Career Guidance Centre

Considered career guidance is key to helping individuals fulfil their personal potential. At the Career Guidance Centre at Blue Roof Life Space, we provide learners with the relevant information and advice they need to intentionally research, plan and develop their career paths.

We engage with learners from Grade 9 through to Grade 12, as well as unemployed youth. The technologically-advanced programme takes individuals through a career assessment process, empowering them to make the right decisions about their future, from subject selection to their choice of tertiary institution. This is rounded off by much-needed workplace skills for unemployed youth between 18 and 25.

A community of care

We have a number of other organisations working with us at Blue Roof, making it a truly multidisciplinary community space.

  • Made for More: an organisation empowering children and youth with disabilities.
  • City Celebration: after-school dance workshops and holiday clubs
  • Lalela Arts: after-school visual arts programme
  • Hope for the Heart: pregnancy crisis counselling
